We would like to thank all of the families who participated in Extreme STEAM Science Kids’ FREE Hour of Code Event on January 16th! It was a spectacular experience watching children as young as 5 coding and so excited about Computer Science.

Our Hour of Code was a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. This free event was offered to local elementary school children grades Kindergarten – 5th. Extreme STEAM Science Kids believes that every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.

Each session began with a brief overview presentation about the concept of coding and how it impacts the technology that we use in our everyday lives. With step-by-step instruction each child wrote multiple lines of code using blockly, which is a visual aid that groups lines of code in blocks in order to drag and drop them to create a program.  Using this method through the Code.org website, they worked on multiple puzzles which included programming a Minecraft puzzle, creating a Star Wars Galaxy, helping Elsa from Frozen ice skate, or walking through an Angry Birds maze!

Computer Science Education Week took place the week of December 7-14, however we at Extreme STEAM Science Kids at Park Shore felt so strongly about the importance of this initiative that we decided to extend the date and bring it to The Extreme STEAM Science Kids curriculum for this one-day learning event! We look forward to more exciting events in the near future.

A reporter and photographer from Newsday came to cover the event. Check out the great article!
