2020 ESSK Classes

Extreme STEAM Science Kids Junior: Grades K-2

This is a perfect introduction to the world of technology for a young child.  This one-of-a-kind program will captivate and stimulate a child’s interest and keep them engaged during each and every class.  They will first learn what a robot is and how it reacts to the world around it. They will learn how to program a robot and make it move in a variety of ways.  Once their programming skills have been learned they will be challenged to solve different problems by testing and retesting the solutions they selected. These challenges are designed in the form of games which will keep the class exciting and full of fun.  This class will develop 21st century skills of critical thinking, collaborative teamwork, creativity and adaptability, so vital for every child’s future success as they move into the future.

Extreme STEAM Science Kids Senior: Grades 3-5

This one of a kind class will immerse elementary children into the world of robotics using the Dash robot. Children will be introduced to drag and drop coding which will be used to program their robot. They will work in teams as they build their programming skills which will include simple commands, if-then statements, variables, loops and the use of sensors on their robot.  Students will learn what a robot is, how it interacts in the world around it and understand how robots are used today. As their programming skills improve they will be challenged to use these skills to solve a variety of problems. These challenges will test their understanding of robotic programming and build their critical thinking skills in addition to collaborative teamwork, creativity, and adaptability.  These 21st-century skills are very vital for children’s success as they move into their future.

Robotics With SnappyXO

Grades 4-9

Designed to expose students to the process of design innovation and invention by way of a series of hands-on active and experiential learning activities in the context of robot design. This program will use a novel patent-pending robot kit called SnappyXO for design, open-source microcontrollers from the family of Arduino, and off-the-shelf sensors and actuators to create an intuitive robot design experience. The students will learn to design, prototype, and program robots culminating in an extensive robot design project. In addition, they will use a novel motion synthesis app called MotionGen for designing motions of their robots. The key fundamentals learned in the program will be a concept of forces and motions, mechanism design, electronic circuits, and microcontroller programming.

Working with the SnappyXO, students will be able to appreciate Physics, Engineering, and Robotics by designing and building complex 3D structures and robots and learn the process of design innovation in a systematic fashion. Kits like these serve as an educational sandbox that removes the artificial boundaries between learning and playing while providing more time for hands-on activities that enhance children’s cognition. Ultimately, these experiences will help children prepare better for an innovation-based economy.

Raspberry Pi JamAcademy

Physical Computing with the Raspberry Pi

Grades 7-12

This course is designed for secondary level students to gain experience with computational and design thinking through the interaction with Raspberry Pi single-board computers. It will meet weekly for two hours after school for ten weeks. Students will work in teams of two as they gain experience assembling electronics, writing text-based code, and creating graphical user interfaces to solve problems. The course will be designed around the ATPS learning structure in which students experience quick “wins” as they Assemble and learn the basics. This will transition into Tinkering with their newfound skills to gain more in-depth knowledge. In the Play phase, they will be given an opportunity to build unique projects of their choosing that solves a problem they find interesting or important. They will then share their creations with the group for feedback and iteration.
